Man charged over alleged serious assault – George St, Launceston

Today, Launceston CIB detectives have charged a 25 year old George Town man with assault following an incident in George Street, Launceston in the early hours of Sunday the 13 August 2017. The charged man has been detained in custody and will appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court at 2.15pm today.

Police allege that during the incident, a 21 year old Ravenswood man was knocked unconscious on George Street, Launceston, near the intersection with Paterson Street. That man is currently in a critical but stable condition in the Royal Hobart Hospital. Police have not been able to speak with the man due to his condition.

Police are seeking witnesses who were in the George Street area around the time of the alleged assault to please come forward.

“CCTV footage has clearly identified a number of people who were in the area at the time of the alleged assault,” Senior Constable Josh Hayes said.

“In particular, we are interested in speaking to a second man who may have been allegedly assaulted during this incident.”

Police are also interested in any ‘dash cam’ footage that cars and taxis may have of the alleged incident.
