Lucille Butterworth investigation

A 42 year old missing person case is being actively investigated by Tasmania Police.

The disappearance in 1969 of 20 year old Lucille Butterworth is one of Tasmania’s most high profile missing person cases.

About 5.45pm on 25 August 1969 Lucille Butterworth disappeared from a bus stop at the corner of Box Hill Road and Main Road Claremont.  She had intended to catch a bus to New Norfolk.

In recent months Glenorchy CIB detectives have been reviewing the case and are undertaking fresh enquiries as a result of that review.

“We believe that Lucille was murdered and this case remains a matter of significance for Tasmania Police.  It is not forgotten and filed away after 42 years,” said Detective Inspector, David Plumpton.

“There is a person of particular interest to detectives.  This man, now aged in his 60s, was living in New Norfolk at the time of Lucille’s disappearance.”

“Any information or advice from the community who may have recollections would be appreciated, to assist police to achieve a positive finalisation for the family,” said Inspector Plumpton.

“Sadly Lucille’s mother and father have now passed away, however she is survived by her brothers who would like closure for both them and their families.”
