Longford Firearms Amnesty – 7 November

The Northern Midlands community is advised that Tasmania Police will be holding a firearms amnesty at Longford Police Station next week.

Anyone with unwanted, unregistered, or illegal firearms can bring them to the Longford Police Station between 9am and 5pm on Saturday 7th of November. There will be no penalty or charges for illegal possession.

The firearms will be accepted by police without question and destroyed.

Acting Sergeant Sam Lloyd said that firearms were part of the Northern Midlands community, saying that people often come into possession of unwanted or unregistered guns.

“People can come into possession of these types of guns through a variety of ways and it often involves circumstances beyond their control,” Acting Sgt Lloyd said.

“Amnesties like the one to be held at the Longford Police Station are a great way to dispose of unwanted or unregistered firearms.

“Since September 2013, 712 firearms have been handed throughout the State at site specific amnesty operations.”

Advice for anyone who wants to hand over a firearm or ammunition:

  • Ensure the firearm is unloaded before transporting it
  • Park in the designated area, where a police officer will assist.

Members of the public can also attend the police station and speak to officers in relation to any information they may have on firearm crime or any other offences.

Alternatively information can be passed to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
