Longford and Launceston flood preparedness and response

Tasmania’s north region has experienced significant rainfalls over the past months. Water tables and river catchments are at capacity.

The State Emergency Service advises that there are flood warnings for the North Esk, South Esk, Meander and Macquarie Rivers. The South Esk is in moderate flood and is anticipated to peak at approximately 6.5 – 7 metres at Longford on Friday afternoon. Trevallyn Dam is expected to peak at approximately 1400 cubic metres per second on Friday evening (possibly higher). The Bureau of Meteorology and the State Emergency Service are carefully monitoring the situation. Residents of Longford, Invermay and low-lying areas of Launceston (e.g. Seaport) are advised to carefully monitor the situation and to take flood preparedness action (see below).

Members of the Northern Regional Emergency Management Committee met early this evening to discuss required preparedness and response actions in light of the significant flows travelling down the South Esk. Members of the public can feel reassured that robust plans are in place and that while they are asked to be ALERT, there is not cause for ALARM.

SES advises the following precautions BEFORE the flood for residents and businesses living in low-lying flood-prone areas:

  • Make sure all poisons are stored well above ground level
  • Have suitable protective footwear available
  • Ensure you have candles and matches in waterproof containers available
  • Prepare a flood emergency kit including a torch and battery operated radio with fresh batteries to listen for flood warnings and updates on your local ABC radio station
  • Have a supply of bottled water and food for you and your pets
  • Disconnect electrical items
  • Turn of power sources such as gas and electricity if flooding occurs
  • Have waterproof bags ready to protect clothing and important documents from flood waters
  • Listen to local ABC radio for flood updates

SES advises the following precautions DURING and AFTER a flood:

  • Do not enter any flood water unless you are sure it is safe to do so
  • Do not allow children to play in flood water
  • Watch for trapped animals
  • Beware of fallen power lines
  • Do not turn on your gas and electricity until you are sure it is safe to do so
  • Listen to the radio for flood updates
