Light aircraft crash

At approximately 6.45pm on Tuesday the 29 March 2011 Devonport Police attended the scene of a plane crash in the Mersey River, Devonport on the eastern side of the river near the municipal boundary with Latrobe.

Prior to police arrival at the scene, members of the Mersey Rowing Club had retrieved the pilot and sole occupant of the plane, a 47 year old Georgetown man.  the pilot received minor injuries which were checked at the scene by Ambulance Tasmania, however did not require hospitalisation.

The plane, a Sky Fox 2 seat ultra-light aircraft, was written off as a result of the crash.

Initial enquiries have revealed that pilot error was the likely cause of the incident resulting in an emergency landing in the river.

Enquiries are continuing and Tasmania Police will prepare a report for the Recreational Aviation Authority (RAA).

The plane is likely to be recovered from the river on the 30 March 2011.
