On Saturday 8/8/2020, two separate incidents of excessive speeding by motorcycle riders were detected by police in the Northern District.

At 17:35 hours Longford Police were conducting mobile speed checks on the Midland Highway near Campbell Town, when a blue Kawasaki motorcycle, ridden by a 30-year-old man from Bridgewater, was detected travelling at 129km per hour. The man is the holder of a current learner’s licence and therefore restricted to a maximum speed of 80km per hour. The Kawasaki was seized by police.

At 20:00 hours West Tamar Police were conducting mobile speed checks on the West Tamar Highway near Legana, when a black Kawasaki, ridden by an 18-year-old Legana man, was detected travelling at 157km per hour. The man is the holder of a current learner’s licence and therefore restricted to a maximum speed of 80km per hour. The motorcycle was returned to the registered owner.

Both men will be charged with hooning offences and will appear in court at a later date.

Inspector Craig Fox said, “Safety on our roads is a priority for Tasmania Police. Speeding is part of the ‘fatal five’ and has been a contributing factor in recent motorcycle fatalities in Tasmania. Police urge all motorists to drive and ride lawfully for the safety of all road users.”
