Launceston floods update
The flood threat to low lying areas of Launceston has eased however water levels are expected to remain high throughout the weekend.
Police, SES and Launceston City Council personnel have spent the night monitoring levee banks. No problems, such as seepages, have been encountered.
The Tamar River at Launceston peaked around 9.00 am at approximately 2.6 m.
“The risk of major levee failure is now considered minimal. Based on initial estimates it was thought that this could be a one in 50 year flood. However, this has now been revised and based on current flows it now looks to be less than a one in 20 year flood,” said Northern Commander Richard Cowling.
“While the risk of inundation has now been reduced there are still considerable dangers associated with high and fast flowing water as flooding will continue for several days.
“Members of the public are strongly advised to avoid all flood waters due to hazards associated with debris and fast flows,” he said.
The only evacuation centre activated, at the Launceston University gymnasium, has now been closed. However authorities will continue to monitor the situation over the weekend.
The Launceston Basin and Gorge area has been closed to the public for safety reasons.
In Longford waters are receding, and the levee gates are being removed and the clean up is underway.
Members of the public should listen to local media for further updates or check the police website at www.police.tas.gov.au. If you wish to report flooding contact the State Emergency Services on phone: 132 500. Any other enquires should be directed to police on 1800 049 508.
Police thank the public for their cooperation and assistance, as well as the SES, Launceston City Council, the media, and everyone involved in the response.
