Launceston flood update – 5.30 a.m.

The flood peak at Longford occurred at 6pm last night.  The peak was below the anticpated level of 8.25 Meters and was recorded at 6.4 meters.  The waters at Longford have continued to recede over night.

Police and SES have continued to monitor water levels and flood levees in the South and North Esk Rivers overnight. No problems have been detected in the Launceston area. The Tamar River at Launceston is expected to peak between 7am and 10am.  High tide is at 7.10 am and will raise the levels by 0.45 m.

Police and SES conducted doorknocks overnight of people in Invermay and Inveresk to provide further advice. 

Police are not issuing an evacuation order but urge people to be prepared to evacuate if required in the next 24 hours. Cars should be packed with warm clothing, blankets and water, and preparations made for pets. 

Those persons who wish to leave now can do so, and stay with family or friends.  Launceston City Council have established an evacuation centre at the Launceston University gymnasium.  Police ask that if anyone in Invermay or Inveresk chooses to leave their home or needs assistance that that they notify police on 1800 049 508. 

The Launceston Basin and Gorge area has been closed and the public should stay away from those areas as well as Kings Wharf in Inveresk.
