King Island Mobile Firearm Amnesty
A mobile firearms amnesty conducted on King Island on Friday 2 October resulted in 20 firearms and a variety of assorted ammunition being surrendered to police and removed from the island.
The Officer in Charge of Currie Police Station, Sergeant Steve Shaw, said that he was pleased with the result.
“The response within the community in the lead up to the amnesty and in the few days following has been very positive,” said Sergeant Shaw.
Sergeant Shaw went on to issue a reminder that people don’t have to wait for a designated amnesty day in order to surrender unwanted firearms.
“Our mobile amnesty day last Friday was an ideal way to highlight the issue of disposal of unwanted firearms; however people should be aware that they can surrender old guns, rifles and ammunition on any day under the permanent amnesty,” he said.
