Kayak Located Bellerive Bluff – Concern For Welfare

Approximately 7:25am on Saturday the 2nd August 2014 police were alerted to a kayak that had washed up on to the rocks at Bellerive Bluff, Bellerive. There were concerns surrounding the circumstances of the kayak as there was a mobile phone attached to it.

An extensive land and sea search was conducted by utilising local police officers, Tasmanian Police vessels and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. Eventually the owner of the kayak, a 47 year old male from Tasmania, was located on a yacht moored off Marieville Esplanade, Sandy Bay.

The male had been checking the yacht yesterday evening, as it was his, and his kayak came loose and floated away. The male spent the night on the yacht and was in good spirits despite being cold.

Police remind people to always be cautious on the water, especially in adverse weather conditions and to always be prepared by wearing and having the appropriate safety equipment no matter the length of the journey.
