Kayak Fatality

About 11.10am on Saturday the 20th of October 2012 police were called to assist with a kayaker who was in danger about 1km north of Bridport.  The 47 year old male was kayaking with 6 other people at the time. 

Prior to police arrival the merchant vessel Matthew Flinders went to the aid of the kayaker and retrieved him from the water.  Crew from the Matthew Flinders and a member of the kayaking group provided medical treatment while arrangements were made to get the male to land.

Crew from the Matthew Flinders, a police officer and another member of the kayak group swam the male to shore where staff from Ambulance Tasmania and a Hobart based medical practitioner provided medical treatment, however the male died at the scene.

Police are preparing a report for the coroner.
