Joint Operation Vouch

Further searches and arrests have been undertaken today as part of Operation Vouch, a multi-agency operation to disrupt drug trafficking activity in Tasmania.

Operation Vouch is a joint investigation with Tasmania Police, the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Crime Commission.

It will be alleged that over the past 8 months traffickers were involved in the sale of drugs valued at more than $300,000.

The AFP's Criminal Assets Confiscation Taskforce, with the support of the ACC, has restrained ten properties and 13 vehicles under Commonwealth proceeds of crime legislation. The properties are estimated to be worth more than $2.5 million, and the vehicles up to $250,000.

This morning, three properties in Glenorchy, two in Moonah and one house in Brighton were searched by 50 drug squad and uniform officers, both Tasmania Police and AFP, supported by drug dog teams.

Two people have been arrested, one in relation to trafficking in amphetamine and one in relation to selling cannabis.  Police have seized cannabis from a hydroponic grow room.
A one metre long freshwater crocodile was located in a glass tank.

“By working together with other jurisdictions and agencies we are successfully targeting the importation and distribution of illicit drugs in Tasmania,” said Acting Assistant Commissioner, Tony Cerritelli.

ACC National Manager Investigations, Richard Grant, said that the collaborative approach was vital.  “This is a great result for Tasmania and for the nation, and highlights the strength that partnership brings to combating organised crime”.

“Operation Vouch has resulted in the disruption of a significant drug distribution network, and I want to thank the officers of other Australian Police Services and Commonwealth agencies involved for their commitment and determination on this investigation,” said Detective Inspector Glenn Lathey.

AFP Manager of Criminal Assets Matt Rippon said this operation is an outstanding result for all law enforcement agencies involved.

“This operation demonstrates the ongoing commitment by the AFP to work collaboratively with our partner agencies to take the profit away from organised crime and in the process, disrupt their enterprise,” said Commander Rippon.

Operation Vouch is an ongoing investigation.  Anyone with information about the sale or importation of illegal drugs is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
