Investigation continuing into fatal crash at Brinktop Road
Police are continuing to investigate the fatal crash on Brinktop Road, near Penna yesterday evening.
Deputy Commissioner Donna Adams said preliminary investigations indicate a Black Toyota Hilux travelling towards Sorell appeared to momentarily drift onto the incorrect side of the road about 5pm.
“A red Daewoo hatch travelling towards Richmond appears to have then taken evasive action, resulting in that vehicle being driven onto the wrong side of the road and colliding with a blue Holden Cruze,” she said.
“Sadly, emergency services arrived moments later to find two people, a woman in her 50s and her 16-year-old son, had died at the scene.”
“The woman who was driving the Cruze suffered serious injuries and is currently in the Royal Hobart Hospital receiving medical treatment.
“Her son (aged in his early 20s) was a passenger in the car and was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”
“I can confirm that the woman driving the Hilux was an off duty police officer, she was not physically injured in the incident,” she said.
“At this stage, we don’t know why the Hilux has come to be on the wrong side of the road and our priority is to fully investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and prepare a report for the Coroner.”
“The Tasmania Police Professional Standards Command attended the scene last night and will fully investigate the matter.”
“Support is being offered to the families involved in this tragic incident as well to those first responders who attended.”
“We’d like to extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of all those involved in the crash. Our thoughts continue to be with everyone involved in the incident at this difficult time.”
