Incident – Targa

Incident – Targa

Police are investigating an “act of sheer stupidity” following the discovery of an amount of oil on the first leg of the Targa circuit for today.

Prior to the first stage commencing this morning, safety checks were conducted on the route.

A quantity of oil was located on Caveside Road, Molecreek about half way through the first stage.

Investigators believe the oil placement to have been a deliberate act, with the intent of disrupting the Targa event.

As a result of the discovery the event stage was downgraded to “Touring” and motorists were able to pass through the area without incident.

“Had this discovery not been made prior to the race commencing, the consequences of this action could have been very serious,” said Inspector Flude.

“Further, this could have affected anyone using the road prior to the event leg commencing.  The complete disregard for motorists’ safety is unfathomable,” he said.

“This is a greatly concerning incident and police would like to hear from anyone who may have information relating to this.  Please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 – you can remain anonymous if you wish to do so.
