Holiday prize scam alert

Tasmania Police are warning members of the community to be aware of the latest instalment of a scam where luxurious vacations, as well as cash prizes can be won.

The scam arrives in a letter in the post addressed to a resident’s address.  Inside is a brochure and some scratchy tickets.  There will normally be two tickets and one will be a winner.   The usual winning ticket provides for a 2nd prize of $180,000.

The latest scam is from a company called Sparking Sword Vacation and White Hunter Vacation.  Their websites have low or unknown trust ratings and both are new sites.

The ‘winning’ ticket will require you to telephone the company which is based in Malaysia.  In order to collect the prize, a cash deposit will need to be made into an offshore account.

Constable Rory Carmichael of Devonport Police states, “A 74 year old man from Devonport was recently caught in this scam.  He paid $2120 in two payments and was then asked for more funds.”

Tasmania Police advise extreme caution when receiving any unsolicited approaches with any prize or cash return attached.
