High Speeds Detected
Police are hoping that a number of high speed vehicle detections in the Western District over the past few days are an anomaly as opposed to a shift towards foolhardy driver behaviour.
The detection of a provisional licence holder travelling at 145kmph with an unrestrained child in the front seat of the vehicle is one of a few incidents that have shocked police during this operation.
This detection came shortly after police intercepted an unaccompanied learner driver travelling at 117km per hour on the same stretch of road. “The driver was clearly shaken upon seeing police and it serves as a timely reminder that we may be in locations where you least expect to see us,” said Sgt Steve Keiselis of Western Traffic.
This recent operation also caught a couple of inexperienced learner motorcyclists, driving at speeds of up to 44kmph over the advertised speed limit.
Other notable speeds detected include a p plate driver travelling at 124km per hour on the Ridgley Hwy, a motorist detected at 137km per hour on the Murchison Hwynear Waratah, and another detected at 131km per hour on the Bass Hwynear Smithton on a wet and slippery road.
“All detected drivers have been proceeded against. Vehicle clamping, immediate disqualification, court proceedings and traffic infringement notices have all been enforced,” said Sgt Keiselis.
“In general the motoring public are showing responsible and pleasing driving behaviours however it’s always disappointing to see that a few people are still prepared to engage in high risk driving behaviour,” he said.
