Helicopter Rescue – Loddon Plain

At approximately 12:20pm on 5/5/11 Tasmania Police were advised by AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority) of a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) activation on the Loddon Plain. Subsequently the Police Rescue Helicopter was activated and the crew located the beacon several hundred metres from the walking track which eventually leads to Frenchman’s Cap.

A 30 year old Victorian bushwalker had become lost in the Loddon Plain which is notoriously wet and boggy. The helicopter was unable to land due to the wet ground but the crew were able to assist the man on board whilst hovering negating the need to winch him out.

The man was uninjured and was subsequently dropped at his rental car on the Lyell Highway.
