Helicopter rescue after vehicle attempts to cross river

At 4pm on Friday 24/4/2016 a 4WD utility was swept downstream when attempting to drive through a narrow river crossing at the Elizabeth River, Campbell Town on a rural property. The driver was familiar with the crossing. The vehicle stalled when entering the water and was swept 100 metres where it became lodged against a large rock.

The vehicle quickly took on water and the two male occupants, aged 25 & 26 years, were forced to climb on to the rear tray of the utility. Property owners and friends were able to throw a winch cable across to secure the vehicle.  The males remained there whilst unsuccessful attempts were made to return the vehicle to the river bank.

Police were contacted by the driver. Local Police and State Emergency Service attended and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked. Both men were winched to safety from the vehicle and flown to nearby Campbell Town where they were checked by Ambulance personnel. Both men suffered mild exposure but were otherwise uninjured.

Police again warn motorists to avoid crossing water hazards and flooded areas – caused due to recent heavy rain in many areas state-wide.
