Helicopter Rescue – Adventure Bay 12-April

At approximately 10:00am on Saturday 12/4/14 a 53 year old, 26 year old and a 6 year old child were involved in a boating accident at Coal Point, Adventure Bay. The accident occurred whilst attempting to retrieve a net into the 18 foot fibreglass boat. The net became entangled in the propellers and as a result the boat washed onto rocks at Coat Point.  All of the occupants attempted to climb onto the rocks but the child was swept away momentarily until he was rescued by the 26 year old.

Eventually all three made it safely ashore and used a mobile phone to call for assistance. Due to their location and the sea state the police vessel “Relentless” was unable to access them and the Bruny Island police officer was unable to access them by land due to cliffs.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was then activated and winched a paramedic to their location. All three of the occupants were then winched from the rocks and flown to helicopter base in Hobart with no injuries. The boat had sunk by the time the helicopter arrived.

The occupants were all wearing PFDs.
