Heavy vehicle crash Bass Highway
At about 6.29 am on Thursday 9th August 2012, a crash has occurred on the Bass Highway, at the eastern end of the overtaking lanes, just west of the Meander River overpass.
A green Volvo prime mover, driven by a 47 year old Burnie man, has been stopped in the east bound lane, facing east. The Volvo was laden with containers and was waiting for a prime mover that was travelling west, under escort by Transport Inspectors and trucking contractors. The prime mover travelling west had blocked the bridge over the Meander River and traffic had been stopped to allow the prime mover to clear the bridge.
At this time, a white International prime mover, was laden with a blue metal product, and had been driven east on the Bass Highway, by a 21 year old Bridport man. The prime mover has driven into the rear of the stationary green Volvo Prime Mover.
As a result of the crash, the Bass Highway was closed for a number of hours and traffic was diverted. Both truck drivers suffered only minor injuries. Police are seeking people who may have witnessed the crash or the Transport convoy prior to the crash to contact Northern Crash Investigation Services on 6336 3936 or 6336 3701.
