Health concerns over tea-like drink

Hobart police are seeking information from anyone who may have recently been offered a potentially dangerous tea-like drink in the CBD.

Over the past fortnight a number of people in the Hobart CBD have been offered a tea like drink, which is a residual product of a poisonous plant commonly known as Datura.

When consumed the drink can provide symptoms including severe hallucinations, bizarre and paranoid behaviour and periods of amnesia.

There can serious health risks if Datura is consumed and a number of young people have already been required to attend hospital for treatment.

A male person from the Channel area will be summonsed for Supplying a Restricted Substance.

Police are concerned for the health of anyone who may consume the drink, or may be in possession of the substance.   Anyone who has consumed the drink or who has any information in relation to it is asked to contact Constable EAVES at Hobart Station on (03) 6230 2375 or Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
