Have fun but don’t drink drive this Australia Day

Tasmania Police wants everyone to get home from Australia Day celebrations safely.

Police will be paying particular attention to alcohol and drug driving, one of the Fatal Five, and one of the biggest contributors to death and injury.

There will be highly visible police operations throughout the State.

Inspector John Ward, of Southern Roads and Public Order Response Division, said that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs greatly increases the chances of crashing.

“Your consumption of alcohol and drugs is directly correlated to your driving capability to the extent you’re not thinking clearly, nor acting predictably and your reactions are going to be a lot slower than usual. Whether you realise it at the time or not, you are a danger to yourself and everyone else you’re sharing the road with,” Inspector Ward said.

“If you’re going to celebrate, it is absolutely necessary to plan ahead and make sure you have independent transport home so you’re not tempted to take risks.”
