Fraudulent sale of electrical goods – cold call scam
Tasmania Police has identified a suspect in an investigation into reports of a man purporting to be selling liquidated electrical goods that never arrive.
A number of reports have been received from members of the community across the state who have received calls from a man offering goods such as televisions, phones and white goods for sale.
The male caller claims to be selling items on behalf of his uncle, “Michael Walsh”, and is targeting small businesses for cash payments by way of bank deposits.
Some businesses have reported that the caller seems to have local knowledge and is quite convincing. It is likely that he has conducted research online to gain the confidence of his victims before offering heavily discounted items that are to be delivered locally. The items never arrive.
Police have identified a suspect residing in New South Wales and are working with NSW Police to investigate the matter.
If any members of the public have received a phone call from a man selling goods such as those described and have sent money they are encouraged to contact their bank or financial institution and attend their local police station to make a report.
