Footy focus on drink driving and anti-social behaviour

Tasmania Police officers are ready for tomorrow’s AFL Grand Final day – a traditionally busy day for policing.

Police want everyone to have a good time but are warning that they will not tolerate anti-social behaviour in public places.

Additional officers will be out across the State with anti-social behaviour and drink driving expected to be the main causes for police intervention.

Inspector John Ward said:

“We like to see people having a good time and grand final day is a day to enjoy for a lot of people.

“While we want people to get into the spirit, we also want people to be sensible and ensure they can look back on the day without regret.

“Drinking too much can cause some people to take unnecessary risks.

“After a few too many drinks some people get aggressive or violent and our officers will be looking to come down on that type of behaviour very quickly.”

Police are also reminding people that drinking in the street is against the law.

Anyone suspected of being underage in a pub or club will be checked for identification.

In Hobart, mobile police patrols and booze buses will be operating throughout the greater Hobart area focusing on the ‘Fatal Five’ contributors to serious and fatal road crashes.

Drink and drug driving will not go by unnoticed and other traffic related enforcement activities will focus on speed detection, inattention, failing to wear seatbelts and using mobile phones whilst driving.

In the last few weeks several motorists in the South of the State have been charged with high-range drink driving offences.

One person blew four times the legal limit at 0.2%.

Another person blew more than three times the legal limit at 0.175%

Inspector John Ward said:

“It may seem like common sense to most people but it’s a good time to remind people of some of basic tips for ending a night as well as it starts.

“Some simple things like arranging a non-drinking designated driver, knowing public transport routes and timetables or having the taxi number to hand can ensure the day ends on a high.

“If you’re hosting a party at home make sure there is plenty of food and non-alcoholic drinks available.  Be aware of how much your friends are drinking and ensure they can get home safely.

“Drink driving is never ok, not even if you’re only going a short distance from your mate’s place to home.

“Drink driving is a major cause of serious and fatal crashes. It puts you and other road users at risk,” he said.
