Five vehicle crash Tasman Highway
A 20 year old male from Blackmans Bay was admitted to the Royal Hobart Hospital on the evening of Friday the 22nd day of June 2011 after a five (5) car crash on the Tasman Highway near Cambridge Park about 6pm.
An unrelated crash had earlier occurred on the Tasman Highway near Midway Point which resulted in a build up of east bound traffic west of the airport roundabout. The traffic was banked back to Cambridge Park.
At approximately 6pm a red Toyota Corolla Seca hatch was travelling in the right hand east bound lane. It would appear the driver (the male from Blackmans Bay) has failed to see the cars travelling in front of him stop due to the traffic build up.
The driver of the Corolla has applied his brakes but the front of his vehicle collided with the rear of a Holden Cruise. The front of the Cruise collided with the rear of a blue Saab. At this time there was a grey coloured Toyota Camry travelling east behind the Corolla. The Camry has collided with the rear of the Corolla. This impact has forced all vehicles forward and the front of the Saab has then collided with the rear of a Ford sedan.
The driver of the Ford a 65 year old man from Richmond and a 46 year old male passenger in the Holden Cruise were conveyed to the Royal Hobart Hospital for observation.
The crash disrupted east bound traffic for approximately 4 hours whilst investigations were undertaken and the scene was cleared.
The crash is being investigated by Senior Constable Jennifer WOOD from Bellerive Police. She would like to hear from any member of the public that may have witnessed the crash.
