Officers from Western Drug Investigation Services have seized a number of firearms and illegal weapons after a search at an address in central Devonport.
The seizures are;
– crossbow
– .22 calibre Magnum Pistol
– .22 Calibre Bolt Action Rifle
– SKS Semi Automatic Assault Rifle
– 12 gauge under and over Shotgun
– An Air Rifle
The SKS Semi Automatic Assault Rifle, in particular, is a prohibited weapon.
A 30 year old man from Devonport has been charged with numerous firearm and drug related offences and bailed to appear at the Devonport Magistrates Court on 29 April 2014.
It is alleged that no occupants of the residence hold a firearm licence, and that none of the firearms have ever been registered. Ammunition for each of the weapons was also seized and the firearms were not stored in accordance with legislation.
This seizure is a timely reminder about the Tasmania Police mobile firearms amnesty at Devonport and Burnie this weekend.
The mobile firearm amnesty is being held on Saturday 22 March at the Devonport Showgrounds between 9am and 5pm, and on Sunday 23 March at the Burnie Showgrounds between 9am and 5pm.
Anyone with an unwanted firearm or ammunition can hand it to police, anonymously if they wish, and no action will be taken in relation to the unauthorised possession of the firearm.
Police would also like to remind anyone with unwanted or unregistered firearms that there is a permanent amnesty for handing them over at any police station.
