Thirteen firearms and a considerable quantity of related ammunition have been seized during a search of a property in Southern Tasmania on Tuesday.

Police also located and seized a trafficable quantity of cannabis plants, being grown hydroponically, and a quantity of steroids/ human growth hormone.

A 41 year old Huon Valley resident has been charged with related firearm and drug offences and will appear in court in Hobart on 1 July, and a 20 year old Huon Valley resident has been charged with firearm related offences and will appear in court in Huonville on 7 July.

Among the firearms seized are high powered and semi auto rifles, semi auto pistols, and a pump action shotgun.

"The result of this specific search is yet another example of operational police officers locating firearms of various types during investigations and searches relating to crime and drugs," said Inspector Glenn Lathey.

“This was a planned search by officers within Drug Investigation services based upon intelligence received. It is not uncommon for firearms to be located during drug related searches however a seizure of this size is significant.

“What we have achieved here is an interruption into a criminal process involving drugs and firearms.

“The community can be reassured that firearm related crime, drug trafficking and serious and organised crime is a priority for police. We are serious about the safety of the community and will not tolerate the unlawful possession of firearms or other weapons nor organised criminal activity,” he said.
