Fire deliberately lit

Last night, Sunday 9 September 2012, Tasmania Fire Service and police personnel attended a house fire in Valentine Street, New Town.   It was the second fire at the same house in a week.

The house was constructed of weatherboard and the fire spread quickly.  One of three motor vehicles parked in the garage was also damaged.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Joel said quick action by attending fire service personnel prevented the fire spreading to surrounding houses.

Police evacuated surrounding residences as a precaution.

“There is evidence the fire was deliberately lit and fire service investigators are supporting Detectives investigating the cause of the blaze,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Joel

Detective Senior Sergeant Joel said the fire was not only a criminal act, but highly irresponsible given the extreme weather conditions across the state yesterday, including high winds.

Investigations by Detectives are continuing.  Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.
