Fire at guest house in New Town

On Sunday the 1st of August 2010 police were informed by Tasmanian Fire Services of a structure fire at Flint House located at 43 Pirie Street New Town. A number of residents were believed to be still inside the residence.

Three fire units responded along with two ambulances and personnel from three uniformed units from Hobart Police Station.

45 residents were evacuated. Two residents were treated for smoke inhalation on site and another treated for minor cuts and lacerations caused when he evacuated his ground floor room via the window. No one required admission to hospital.

The fire was quickly contained and confined to the rear of the building.

Damage is estimated to be between $50,000 and $80,000.

Police were able to liaise with Health Department representatives to arrange alternative accommodation for the residents.

The fire is being treated as suspicious.
