Feedback requested on flood siren test

Tasmania Police advice that the Invermay flood siren will be tested at midday, Monday 10th October 2011.

The flood siren is one of a suite of tools used to warn Invermay residents of the need to evacuate in the event that a major flood threatens to inundate Invermay.

For the past four years, the flood siren has been located on top of the wheat silos. For various reasons, that site is no longer considered appropriate. Plans are now underway to relocate the siren to an alternate site in Invermay.

Commander Cowling advises that "A number of new sites for the siren are being considered. Today's test will allow us to determine the appropriateness of one of the chosen sites."

The flood siren will be sounded at midday for a period of one minute, with a second test being conducted approximately three minutes following that.

SES Regional Manager, Mhairi Revie advises that SES volunteers will be located at different points throughout the suburb in order to assess the audibility of the siren from it's potential new location.

"Following the test, we will be very interested to hear from people living and working in the Invermay area to determine how well the siren can be heard". Members of the public wishing to provide feedback can call the SES on freecall 132 500.
