Fatal Three Vehicle Collision – Bass Highway Devonport
At 10.53am this morning, 2/10/2014 a three vehicle collision occurred on the Bass Highway between Winspears Road junction and Anvers Chocolate.
Crash Investigators believe that a white Hyundai which had been travelling east swerved to avoid colliding with a piece of furniture lying on the road. It appears that the Hyundai swerved towards the left side of the road where the driver lost control of it. The vehicle then went into a yaw, swerving back into the centre of the highway.
At this point a blue Ford Falcon sedan was travelling west in the overtaking lane. This vehicle was being followed by a dark blue Holden Commodore sedan. Both vehicles appear to have been travelling at 110kmh when the Ford collided with the Hyundai.
The driver of the Holden saw what was about to occur and steered her vehicle towards the left side west bound lane but also collided with the Hyundai.
As a result of the collisions the Hyundai came to rest in a grass drain on the left side of the highway. The driver and sole occupant, a 64 year old female from Devonport was treated at the scene but died a short time later from her injuries. Her vehicle was extensively damaged.
The Ford came to rest in the overtaking lane facing west. There were two adults in the vehicle from East Devonport. Both suffered minor, non-life threatening injuries. The vehicle was extensively damaged on the front left quarter.
The Holden also stopped in the centre of the road. There were 4 occupants in this vehicle, also from East Devonport, all of whom suffered non-life threatening injuries. This vehicle suffered extensive frontal damage.
The vehicle from which the furniture fell returned to the scene. That vehicle, a red Ford utility was seized by police along with all other vehicles involved. That vehicle had been driven by a 62 year old man from Latrobe.
Due to the collision, all three lanes on the Bass Highway were blocked. Traffic was diverted while investigations were carried out and the scene cleared.
Crash Investigators would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the collision to contact the Burnie Police Station or leave their details via the Police Assistance Number 131 444.
At this point police have not released any names until all next of kin have been advised. A coronial inquest has been opened in relation to the matter.
