Fatal Three Car Crash – Rocky Cape
At approximately 16.30 hrs on Sunday the 8th of June 2014, a three car crash occurred on Bass Highway at Rocky Cape. The crash occurred approximately 1.7 km west of Pollard Road Junction.
A west bound blue Toyota Echo sedan collided into the rear of a west bound black Nissan Pulsar sedan. The impact caused the Toyota Echo to rotate in an anti-clockwise direction, onto the incorrect side of the road, where it impacted rear end first with an east bound Toyota Hilux utility.
As a result of the crash, a 57 year old female passenger in the rear of the Toyota Echo sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. A 64 year old female passenger also in the rear of the Toyota Echo sustained critical injuries and was conveyed to the North West Regional Hospital at Burnie where she remains in a critical condition. Both women were from Crayfish Creek.
The driver and front seat passenger from the Toyota Echo, the five occupants of the Nissan and the driver of the Toyota Hilux were all uninjured.
As a result of the crash the road was closed for 5 hours with traffic diverted around the scene. Officers from Smithton Police, Wynyard Police, Western District Marine Police, Western District Road and Public Order, Western District Forensic Services and Western District Crash Investigation attended the scene. Members from Tasmania Fire Service, Tasmanian Ambulance Service and Smithton State Emergency Service also attended the scene.
