Fatal Single Vehicle Crash on Tasman Highway at Sorell 9.10pm on Thursday 15 September 2016
A 19 year old man from Midway Point and a 2 year 10 month old female toddler also from Midway Point died as the result of a single vehicle crash on the Tasman Highway Sorell at about 9.10pm on Thursday the 15th day of September 2016.
At this time police were conducting a static Random Breath Testing site on the Tasman Highway Midway Point at the round-a-bout with Penna Road.
Eastbound traffic was stopped at the round-a-bout. A silver coloured Holden Vectra, travelling westbound also stopped in the line of traffic. The Vectra which was being driven by the 19 year old male completed a U turn and travelled back towards Sorell overtaking other vehicles.
Just west of Nash Street, Sorell the driver of the Vectra lost control and the vehicle impacted with a pole on the northern side. The impact caused the vehicle to break into two. The rear of the vehicle remained in contact with the pole and the front came to rest in the west bound lane.
On impact with the pole the rear of the vehicle caught fire and was engulfed in flames. Unfortunately the toddler who was in the rear could not be saved.
The male driver and a front seat passenger were thrown from the front of the vehicle. The driver was declared deceased at the scene. The female passenger was conveyed to the Royal Hobart Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The Tasman Highway in the area of Nash Street was closed for a number of hours whilst investigations were made.
Investigators would like to hear from any member of the public who may have been in the Random Breath Testing line and observed the movement and actions of the Vectra at the time or who may have witnessed the crash.
