Fatal pedestrian collision
At approximately 10.40pm on Friday, 9 December 2011 a fatal collision occurred on the Bass Highway, 150 meters west from Amaroo Drive at Edgecumbe Beach. The collision occurred when a 36 year old male from Burnie was walking in the east bound lane of the highway and was hit by a white Mazda 4wd ute travelling east.
As a result of the collision the male was flung approximately 18 meters from the east bound lane onto the southern side of the highway. He sustained head and torso injuries and died a short time later en-route to hospital in Burnie.
The driver of the vehicle was a 38 year old female from Ulverstone. She was un-injured but quite shaken by the incident.
The highway was closed for 3.5 hours and traffic was diverted around the scene. Police from Wynyard, Crash Investigation and Forensic Services attended the scene along with Traffic personnel.
Police believe there were a number of motorists who saw the male in the area a short time prior to the collision and ask they contact the Burnie Police Station or 131 444.
