Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash – Western Junction (7-Nov)
At 2040 on Friday 7th of November 2014, police detected a vehicle speeding in Evandale township well in excess of the posted speed limit. Police turned to intercept the vehicle but quickly lost sight as it travelled North on Evandale Road, Western Junction . As short time later, approximately 3km north of the Evandale township police drove onto the offending vehicle crashed into another vehicle.
Initial investigations suggest that both vehicles were travelling north, the driver of a blue 2009 Ford XR6 has collided head on into the side of a flat tray being driven by a woman turning right into her driveway in a Nissan Navara. The 54 year old woman died at the scene. The 25 year old Evandale man was taken to the Launceston General Hospital but suffered no serious injuries.
Ambulance Tasmania, Tasmania Fire Service and police attended the scene. Northern Crash Investigaiton Services is investigating the crash. Evandale Road remained closed for four hours while the scene was examined. It is expected that the road will again be closed for one to two hours tomorrow afternoon as investigaitons continue and police survey the scene.
Given that attempts were made to intercept the offending vehicle prior to the crash, members from Professional Standars will be overseeing the investigation.
