Fatal motor vehicle crash in Davey St, Hobart

At approximately 1am on Friday 22 January 2016, a fatal motor vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of Davey and Argyle Streets, Hobart.

 

Initial enquiries have established that a stolen Toyota Rav 4 was travelling at speed along Davey Street, when it collided with a Nissan Tida sedan at the Argyle Street intersection.

 

The 24 year old pregnant driver of the Tida died as a result of the crash and her unborn child was later delivered at the Royal Hobart Hospital.  A two year old child in this vehicle received minor injuries.

 

Based on information received, police believe the stolen Toyota Rav contained four occupants at the time of the crash, all youths.  The driver decamped the scene, immediately following the crash.  Efforts are currently underway to locate the alleged driver with police following a specific line of inquiry.

 

The other three youths have been admitted to hospital for treatment and are assisting police with enquiries.

 

The circumstances leading up to the crash are part of the investigations.

 

The Officer in Charge of the Southern Police District, Commander Glenn Frame said, “This was an avoidable crash, which undoubtedly will have a major impact on all those involved.  On behalf of Tasmania Police and our members, I extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of the deceased”.

 

As part of the investigation police are seeking witnesses to the crash and in addition would encourage anyone who saw the stolen black coloured Toyota Rav (Queensland registration 013LUK) being driven in the greater Hobart area to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
