Fatal crash, Sulphur Creek

At approximately 07.20 hrs on Wednesday 17 October 2012, Police were called to a single vehicle fatal crash on the Bass Highway, between the Howth Roundabout and the Mission Hill Road / Pine Road overpass at Sulphur Creek.

The crash involved a west bound green Daihatsu Terios station wagon being driven by a 40 year old Devonport woman.  The vehicle lost control while in the left hand lane of the west bound dual carriageway, where it entered a side slip.

The vehicle crossed both lanes side-slipping before striking the Brifen fencing in the median strip.  The vehicle travelled over the Brifen fencing and commenced rolling.  It crossed onto the incorrect side of the highway where it rolled over numerous times, crossing both lanes of the highway, narrowly missing east bound traffic before entering the grass verge.  The vehicle then rolled into a cattle culvert where it came to rest.

The 40 year old driver, and sole occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene.

While it is up to the Coroner to determine the cause, alcohol, drugs and speed are not believed to be contributing factors in the crash.  The driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The Bass Highway immediately surrounding the crash scene was reduced to single lanes of traffic flow in both directions for a period of seven hours while Police conducted investigations into the crash.

Members from Tasmanian Ambulance Service, Tasmanian Fire Service, Burnie Police, Western District Forensic Services, Western District Traffic Services and Western District Crash Investigation attended the scene.

Any witnesses who may have seen the green Daihatsu Terios station wagon prior to the crash are asked to contact 1/C Constable Adam LLOYD at Western District Crash Investigation on 131444.
