Fatal crash Sisters Hills
At approximately 8.10am this morning 22 August 2011 a two vehicle collision occurred on the Bass Highway at Sisters Hill, 530 metres east from the Montumana turn-off.
Police believe a blue 2000 Subaru Impreza was being driven east on the highway by a 32 year old female from Rocky Cape when the left side of the vehicle crossed over the edge line and into gravel on the side of the highway. It appears the driver has attempted to correct her position on the road but the vehicle instead crossed into the west bound lane and into the path of a white 2006 Toyota Landcruiser flat tray.
Upon impact, the Subaru rotated approximately 45 degrees. The driver and sole occupant appears to have been killed instantly.
The Toyota travelled off the left side of the highway and into a 2 metre deep drain. The vehicle rolled and landed back on its wheels facing a northerly direction. The driver and sole occupant was a 42 year old man from Burnie. He was un-injured but was conveyed to NWRH by ambulance for observation.
The highway was closed for approximately 2 hours while investigations were carried out. One lane was then opened to traffic for a further 2 hours whilst the scene was cleared.
At the time of the collision the road was dry and the weather was fine and clear. No names have been released. A Coronial Inquest has been opened in relation to the matter.
Crash Investigators would like anyone who may have observed either of the vehicles prior to the collision to contact the Burnie Police Station on 6434 5211 of the police assistance number 131 444.
