Fatal crash on the Bass Highway
At about 6.30pm on Saturday 28 May 2011, a two vehicle fatal crash occurred on the Bass Highway on a straight section of road near Hagley.
A white 1990 Holden Commodore Station wagon has been driven in an easterly direction on the Bass Highway by an 18 year old male from Invermay in Launceston. In the front passenger seat was a 22 year old male also of Invermay.
The vehicle has crossed onto the wrong side of the highway into the westbound lane, and has lost control going into a clockwise rotation and was struck in the front left corner by a westbound white 1996 Ford sedan driven by a 50 year old male of Lower Beulah.
At impact the Ford has rotated to stop on the southern side of the highway facing south with extensive frontal impact damage. The Holden Station wagon has then left the southern side of the highway rolling down a 1 metre high embankment to stop on its roof facing in an easterly direction. The Holden suffered extensive impact damage to the front and left side passenger area.
As a result of the impact the 22 year old front seat passenger in the Holden has been killed. The 18 year old driver was conveyed to the Launceston General Hospital and is in a satisfactory condition. The 50 year old male driver of the Ford was also conveyed to the Launceston general Hospital and is in a satisfactory condition.
