Sadly, an 89-year-old Hayes man has died, following a two vehicle collision which occurred on the Lyell Highway at Lawitta around 9.30am today.

A white Ford van being driven by a 76-year-old man from Maydena, crossed to the incorrect side of the road when exiting a left hand curve.  The van struck a white Hyundai Getz travelling in the opposite direction, driven by the 89 year old Hayes man.

As a result of the crash, the driver of the Getz sustained critical injuries and unfortunately died at the Royal Hobart Hospital just before 3pm.  The driver of the van received leg injuries and he was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital for treatment, where he is reportedly in a stable condition.

Road and weather conditions were wet at the time of the crash.  There were no passengers in either vehicle.
