Fatal Crash – Bass Highway – Rocky Cape – 19 October 2015
FATAL CRASH – BASS HIGHWAY – ROCKY CAPE
At 2.13pm on 19th October 2015, Smithton Police were called to attend a two vehicle crash on the Bass Highway at Rocky Cape.
The crash occurred when a grey 2013 Mazda Hatch crossed into the path of a 2007 Volvo Waste management truck near the brow of a hill. Both vehicles crossed the west bound lane and came to rest in the ditch.
The driver of the Mazda, a 40 year old Youngtown man, who was travelling to Circular Head for business, was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the truck, a 51 year old Burnie man, was conveyed to NWGH. He is currently undergoing surgery for facial injuries.
The Bass Highway was closed for several hours.
Police would like to thank witnesses who attended to the drivers at the scene prior to Emergency Services arriving.
Crash Investigation Services are investigating and a report will be completed for the Coroner.
The crash was attended by Police, Ambulance, SES, Montumana and Hellyer Fire Brigades.
