Fatal Crash – Bass Highway – Circular Head

Shortly after 7.00am this morning police were alerted to a single vehicle crash on the Bass Highway at Hellyer Beach, 600 meters west from Pine Avenue.

It appears that a 26 year old man from Burnie lost control of his 2007 Toyota Camry sedan whilst travelling west on the highway. The vehicle has swerved onto the gravel shoulder, back onto the roadway crossing both lanes before colliding with trees on the northern side of the road.

The driver, who was also the sole occupant of the vehicle, suffered head injuries and died at the scene.

Traffic was diverted through Loosemores Road while police carried out investigations at the scene. The road at the time was damp. The deceased had been wearing his seat belt.

Police would like to speak with anyone who may have seen the Toyota prior to the crash and ask that they contact their local police station or 131 444.

Police from Smithton and Road and Public Order attended, along with local fire and SES personnel.

An inquest has been opened into the matter and the circumstances surround the cause.

Police have not released any names at this stage.
