Fatal crash at Mangalore

A 61 year old Penguin man died as a result of a three vehicle collision on the Midland Highway Mangalore, at approximately 12.57pm on Thursday the 8th of March 2012.

At this time a 2000 Mitsubishi Magna sedan being driven by a 43 year old female from Bagdad was travelling south.  The Magna has crossed to the incorrect side of the road colliding with a north bound Kenworth B double Toll Transport truck.  The truck was being driven by a 61 year old male from Penguin.  A third vehicle a 2005 Mazda 3 being driven by a 20 year old female from Margate also heading south behind the Magna received damage as a result of the initial collision.

The Magna and Mazda have come to rest a short distance from impact.  The truck has continued north where it has crossed to the incorrect side of the road.  The truck at this point has mounted a steep embankment.  The two trailers have rolled and the cabin has twisted before the entire cabin was engulfed in flames.

Unfortunately the driver of the truck was unable to be rescued and died at the scene.

The driver of the Magna was conveyed to the Royal Hobart Hospital where she is reported to be in a critical and unstable condition.  The driver of the Mazda was treated by ambulance at the scene for minor injuries.

At the time of the collision the truck was carrying dry freight.

Police would like to hear from the driver of a blue sedan travelling south at the time of the collision who stopped and assisted at the scene.

The incident is being investigated by crash investigation services of Tasmania Police.
