Extreme Weather event – West Ulverstone (10 Aug)
At approximately 1910hrs on Monday 10th August 2015, Queen Street and Flora Street, West Ulverstone were subjected to extremely high winds and rain described as being like a mini tornado.
Police units travelling through the area at the time became aware of large amounts of debris and building materials strewn along Queen Street and Flora Street and identified that a number of buildings had sustained damage from the high winds.
A residence on Queen Street and a business at the corner of Queen and Alice Streets had completely lost their roofs exposing the insides of the buildings to the elements. Other nearby businesses had also suffered damage to external fittings such as guttering, fascias and antennae.
Police from Ulverstone and Penguin along with the State Emergency Service and technicians from Aurora attended the scene and ensured that members of the public were safe and no-one had been injured as a result of the incident. The buildings suffering damage were checked and owners contacted.
Police later discovered that the Lions Club building at the Ulverstone Showgrounds had also lost its roof this having travelled some distance and landing in Flora Street. A large tree had also landed on the rail line and Tasrail services were suspended whilst the obstruction was removed.
No one was injured as a result of the incidents and a clearer picture of the damage and assessments for insurance will be made in daylight hours.
