Extra demand on helicopter rescue services

The DPEM is funded for the provision of a helicopter rescue service.

An increase in use, since the inception of the contract some ten years ago, has resulted in additional costs, which are currently being absorbed within the Department's budget allocation.

For example, so far this financial year Search and Rescue helicopter hours have increased by 24 hours on the same period last financial year, while Ambulance Tasmania hours increased by 42 hours and Police Operations increased by 18 hours on the same period the previous financial year.

The DPEM is currently in the process of seeking tenders for this service for the next five years, and given this situation it would be inappropriate to comment, or speculate, on costs or funding arrangements.
