This is the second full day of operation Crossroads.

Please note: Due to a systems error we are unable to provide up to date statistics regarding the outputs so far other than what is displayed above.  We hope to rectify this problem in the short term.

Tasmania Police continue to conduct high visibility and covert traffic operations in all areas around the state.

The road toll still remains at zero fatal and zero serious crashes which is extremely encouraging.  Tasmania Police are committed to maintaining this ‘zero’ statistic, but it’s not just our job.  It is also the responsibility of every person using our roads, whether it be in a vehicle, on a motorbike, on a pushbike or on foot.  It only takes one person making one bad decision to cause a tragedy on our roads.  We ask for your help here.

Drink Driving offences still occur regardless of the warnings as to the danger of such activities.  A decision to drink and drive can never be truly justified.  It is a selfish, careless act that places you, your passengers and other road users at risk.    If you are one of these people, our aim is also to catch you with the view of changing you driving behaviour.

In Launceston a 39 year old man was detected driving with a reading of 0.208, 4 times the legal limit.  This man was detected driving against the flow of traffic on York Street.  Again it was pure chance that this did not end in disaster.  He was arrested and issued with an instant 12 month disqualification and will attend court in June.

Police will be on the lookout for all sorts of offences whilst conducting these traffic duties.  At an RBT site in Ringarooma police located 7.5kg of freshly harvested cannabis in a 4wd.  A 51 year old man was arrested and charged with trafficking in a controlled substance.  He was bailed to appear in court at a later date.

For those that are travelling to more isolated areas of the state, expect to see police officers there as well.  Police have conducted and will continue to conduct operations in rural areas. These areas are over represented in fatal and serious crashes due to the nature of the roads, and all too often, the way they in which motorists behave on them. Respect these roads, respect the Road Rules and be very aware of your own limitations.

Tasmania Police ask each and every motorist to drive carefully and be continually aware of the ‘fatal 5’; the five biggest contributors to serious and fatal accidents on our roads, these being:

speed

failure to wear seatbelts or helmets

Alcohol and Drugs

Distraction

Driving whilst tired

When on the roads this Easter, please, take your time, be patient and courteous and make good choices.  This will help ensure you enjoy your Easter Holiday and avoid.
