Tasmania Police have today  conducted a large Traffic Operation on the Midlands Highway north of Kempton, with the assistance of other  Government  Enforcement Agencies.

Members of Tasmania Police Road Safety Task Force,   Bridgewater Uniform Division personnel, together with Transport Safety Inspectors,  Parks Rangers,  Parks Compliance Officers  and Tasmania Police  Dog Handlers conducted  Random Breath Tests,  Drug Tests, Vehicle Checks and Firearms Enforcement checks of motorists between 10.30am and 2.30pm.

Senior Sergeant Parker of Oatlands Police said that “With the opening of the Deer Season this weekend,  it was timely for such a joint operation with other Agencies”

“ One motorist was detected for drink driving with a low range reading.  He is to be summonsed.”

Senior Sergeant Parker said that 1 other  person was to be summonsed for  offences under the Firearms Act which involved the incorrect storage of a firearm,  with  the Police Drug Detector  Dog assisting in several drug detections  that have resulted in  2 persons  being summonsed for possessing cannabis.

Defect Orders were issued to 35  motorists  with vehicle defects.

“Motorists are reminded to do the right thing on our roads and avoid the “fatal five” contributing factors to fatalities and serious injuries on our roads;  speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue and something we are seeing more and more which is attention and distraction,”  Senior Sergeant Parker said.

“There are fines for disobeying the road rules, but the real penalty could be killing or seriously injuring yourself or someone else”
