Drug and firearm offences detected in Furneaux Islands operation
Several people will be proceeded against for drug and firearm offences, following an operation on the Furneaux Islands involving Tasmania Police and the Australian Federal Police.
Last week, Tasmania Police’s Northern Drug Investigation Services led the operation which utilised aircraft, including helicopters and drones, to search for illegal cannabis compounds.
Police vessels were also used to monitor any illegal activity on the water.
Numerous search warrants were executed, and police seized cannabis plants and other drug-related items. Police also seized illegal firearms, and a large quantity of ammunition.
Several Flinders Island residents will be proceeded against for various firearm and drug offences. One arrest was made, resulting in a Lackrana man being charged with firearm possession and cannabis selling charges.
Detective Inspector Craig Fox said the operation was carried out based on intelligence about illegal commercial cannabis cultivation occurring on islands in the Furneaux Group.
“As well as interrupting illegal activity, this operation was about reminding anyone engaging in criminal activity that Tasmania Police is committed to detecting and preventing drug crime, no matter where it’s happening in our state,” he said.
Anyone with information regarding any illegal activity in Tasmania, including drug crime, should report it to police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be provided anonymously.
