Drowning at Swimcart Beach

At 5.30pm 23/01/2015 Tasmania Police responded to a report of a man in difficulties at Swimcart Beach in the Bay of Fires Conservation Area on the East Coast of Tasmania.

A French National aged 29 years and his companion had been camping in the area; the man entered the water but was quickly caught in a rip; he then became exhausted and was pulled further out to sea by the strong undertow.

He was assisted from the water by a surf board rider and other bystanders who immediately commenced resuscitation.

An Ambulance Service Paramedic and Volunteer were quickly on the scene but they were unable to revive the man

Police praised the efforts of those involved who displayed quick thinking and initiative and assisted without placing themselves in danger.

Tasmania Police would like to warn other beach users to be observant of the water conditions and to check local weather reports for surf and tide warnings.

A report will now be prepared for the Coroner
