Drink drivers caught on West Coast
In the past three days, four drink drivers have been caught in isolated West Coast areas popular with visitors over the Christmas period. Two were caught near Granville Harbour and a further two at the Macquarie Heads near Strahan during Tasmania Police’s Operation Crossroads.
Inspector Shane LeFevre said that police have been out in force on West Coast tracks and beaches and were disappointed to have caught so many people doing the wrong thing.
“One of those caught was riding a four-wheel motorcycle, which is of particular concern considering some recent serious and fatal crashes around the state.”
He acknowledged that the vast majority were doing the right thing – wearing helmets, seat belts, and driving or riding responsibly, but did wish to remind visitors that all motor vehicles operated on Tasmanian tracks or beaches must be registered and the driver licenced.
“If you are currently visiting the West Coast you will have seen our officers in some very rugged and isolated areas. They are committed to ensuring a safe environment for all. The message is do the right thing or risk returning home without a licence or much worse. This is about keeping everyone safe.”
Tasmania Police’s Operation Crossroads is in effect until New Year’s Day and focuses on the ‘fatal five’: speeding, seat belts, alcohol & drugs, fatigue and distraction.
